Forget Me Not - Part 2

February Features - Downton on Douglas

Winter, a lingering season, can either be a time for quiet contemplation or the cause of winter doldrums.  Whose spirits wouldn't be lifted by the invitation to "come to tea"?

On Sunday, February 9, we conducted an English Style afternoon tea, selling tickets in advance.
A still from the popular BBC Masterpiece Theater program, Downton Abbey

Our ever changing chalk wall behind the counter at the shop had a Downton theme as well!
To celebrate the 4th season of the popular TV series Downtown Abbey, Soulful Sparrow hosted a Downton Abbey-style tea.  The tea was to be a sit down affair with English style savories, pastries, and of course, TEA.

Guest Speaker Robin Grande speaks on the traditions of English tea
Robin is a tea aficionado and presented a little lecture on tea, its customs, history and a summary of the various types of teas for us. She also contributed the best homemade New York cheesecake in the world for the ladies to enjoy as one of the desserts (or as the English would call desserts, puddings).

To add to the event, we conducted a fashion show featuring items we sell in the shop, as well as knit designs from Elgin Knit Works with a Downton Abbey flair.

We offer Republic of Tea's Downton themed teas in addition to other wonderful flavors of tea

We also offer jewelry that is inspired by the fashions of the Downton Abbey time period

Your hosts, Mary and Judy
Mary and Judy would like to thank everyone who attended our event and who stopped by the shop during our themed "Downton on Douglas" in February.

Love Locks
Pictures of love locks from around the world

Around the world, “Love Locks” hang from bridges, gates, and railings, symbolizing the union of two hearts in a permanent bond. The locks are engraved or illustrated and clasped... the attachment can never be broken.

To be a part of the Love Lock tradition, our customers were encouraged to attach their own padlock in our display window through Valentines Day. We also had locks and keys available for purchase.

Participants made a minimum donation of $3 - often more! - to display this sentiment of everlasting love. The donation went to support the Women’s Crisis Center of Elgin.
